Training and mentoring for construction SMMEs seeking RBM contracts

Six BEE construction companies from RBM's host communities attended a five-day training workshop earlier this month to develop their business management skills and so make them better equipped to take on building projects for RBM and other clients.
"We always try and hire local BEE contractors for the construction of the classrooms, admin blocks and clinics we build in local communities," said Sicebi Mthethwa, RBM's superintendents of LED and rural development, who facilitated the course.
'The contractors have good technical skills because most have worked on building projects throughout their careers, but some lack the business expertise to run a construction project cost-effectively.'

Richards Bay company, Bingelela Consulting Professionals, was contracted to run the workshop at the Esibusisweni Rural Development Centre in Mbonambi from 5 - 9 July.  It covered financial and project management, including:

  • Budgeting and quantity surveying (how to calculate costs and fess)
  • Tendering
  • Statutory compliance (tax, labour requirements, UIF, Workmen's Compensation)
  • Health and Safety
  • Planning for the execution of a project
  • Site organization and the execution of a project

'Ongoing mentoring is a crucial aspect of the programme,' Mthethwa said.  'We believe it is important for the trained contractors to be able to contact Bingelela at any time they need advice whilst working on an RBM project.  This will prevent problems and make sure that the projects run successfully - which will lead to a win-win situation for all involved.'
'It is a practical, empowering course which will also help the contractors move up through the construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) grades.  Although these are specifically designed to enable building companies to register for government and parastatal tenders, a higher CIDB grading will also help them win contracts in the private sector.   Most of the companies attending this course are on Grade One, and we hope they will now be able to advance to Grade Two.'
RBM plans to run two more workshops for local construction SMMEs this year.

More room for Creativity

Lesley Stephensen - Zululand Observer 8 March 2010

EMPANGENI'S Zikulise Arts and Craft Centre now has more room to be creative and increase its community skills development programme.

After two years of planning and implementation, the centre's new building was officially occupied.

The extension provides administration offices and additional space to accommodate more trainees, including Zikulise's ceramic kilns so that pottery training can begin again in earnest.

The extension to the original building was made possible when adjacent land was made available by the City of uMhlathuze.

"The building phase was completed in time and there were no problems at all," said Zikulise's Executive Director, Julie Jonson.

Major funding for the project came from the European Union, the ABSA Foundation and Exxaro KZN Sands.

"Without these funds it would not have been possible to extend our training facilities," she said.

Zikulise was launched in 2004 and in 2007 established itself at the Empangeni Arts and Crafts Centre in Turnbull Street (opposite the Empangeni museum)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

POWER EMPOWERMENT

Through the Past and Present to the Future of Consulting Professionals

Today sees the dawn of a new day for two local companies as they merge to form a strong project management and consulting house.

Bingelela Investments, a BEE company of experienced Chemical Engineers has bought 30% shareholding in SVP, a Quantity Surveyors, Project Management and Arbitration company to form a new company Bingelela Consulting Professionals (BCP).

The relationship began when Bingelela Investments CEO, Sizwe Khumalo, was making enquiries for the development of an Aluminium slug plant in Richards Bay. From then on synergies and complimentary attributes between Bingelela Investments and SVP were identified and the subsequent transaction culminated into the formation of BCP.

Previously SVP’s focus was primarily in the built environment sector, and specifically in the public sector. With the industrial process dimension brought by Bingelela Investments, the new company (BCP) will incorporate work in the booming industrial developments within the private sector as well as the public sector. Therefore BCP will offer a complete project management package from conception state, taking care of quantity survey, project management, architectural, civil and construction issues whilst maintaining a strong focus on the operational aspects of the final product. In the case of industrial projects BCP will go as far as the commissioning and provide consulting services during the project’s operational life.

The BCP team is familiar with industrial processes of most businesses in the region and nationally in south Africa. This comes from more than 45 years of combined theoretical and industrial experience and networking found within the team.

SVP Richards Bay Giving back to the Community

Published in:  Succeed Magazine - June 2006 eThekwini Publication

SVP Richards Bay is driven by the commitment to empower deserving South Africans and the desire to pass on the blessings they have received to communities in need.

"True wealth is not measured by what people have, but by what they give," SVP Richards Bay CEO Johan Richards says.

The quantity surveying and project management company has its foundations cemented in principles regarding ethics, integrity and honesty.  In living out that commitment, the company is currently building houses at its own cost in the Valley of a Thousand Hills - around the western Durban suburbs of Botha's Hill and Hillcrest - that replace the shacks in which the residences currently live.

"This is only the beginning of our dream for helping to relieve the desperate need that exists in families of all races and religions," Richards says.

KrispTrade 24 (Pty) Ltd trading as, SVP Richards Bay has been actively involved in KwaZulu-Natal since 1993, with general quantity surveying services including specializing in electrical and mechanical bill production, construction law and arbitration.  Management has a high regard for relationships, approaching every project with the expectation of establishing a long-term commitment.

Nationally, SVP has a 25-year history that changed its name from Strauss Verwayen and Partners six years ago, but retained the integrity on which the brand has been built.

Management's determination to maintain the highest possible standards of competence in client service, effectiveness, integrity and confidentiality, quality and professionalism has been the backbone behind the company securing projects ranging from R100 000 to R300 million.

As development is changing the urban landscape, SVP has been behind industrial parks, office developments, shopping centers, hospitals and schools that are making a difference in the communities they serve.

The Richards Bay operation has grown from humble beginnings with two people to a company of three directors, six full-time employees in the head office, branch offices in Mkuze and Hillcrest and a host of part time associates.

The past three years has seen SVP Richards Bay involved in programme management for the Department of Works - North coast Regions, gaining experience in governmental structures, procedures and legislation relating to national and local government structures.

Company philosophy embodies ensuring clients receive optimum advantages in terms of time and capital spent.  Direct personal commitment amongst the partners remains a priority.

"SVP has benefited from rapid but steady growth over the years through a policy of motivated and genuine concern for clients needs," Richards says.

The empowerment side of the equation has seen SVP embrace a strict affirmative action policy across the board from technical personnel to qualified quantity surveyors.  The company has also embraced the national skills development initiative by assisting and training small builders on contractual and sub-contractual issues.

In building low-cost housing projects, SVP has been the facility through which developing builders can obtain credit facilities, buy materials and control wages.

Richards says in being accredited to the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building - Africa, clients can be assured that management remains on the pulse of legislation and developments with the building industry.
